Last week I got to get a sneak preview of Josh Madsen’s new film “The FreeHeel Life”

Josh has been my idol, mentor, and friend for the past five seasons. He has been coined the grandfather of freestyle telemark skiing, and has worked tirelessly to expand the way we and the industry think about the sport of telemark skiing.

I have been luck enough to work with Josh on a few film projects such as Lipstick Films, “Since We Last Spoke” and “Definition” both of which were designed to challenge the traditional telemark image. Through young talent, quick edits, and rowdy music, the films were aimed at a youth based telemark culture. The past endeavors were definitely met with much criticism ( as most cutting edge pieces are), but Josh has always kept in the game and has always beaten to his own drum.TourPoster_PC

This past season he told me in March that he was going to, not only be the new editor of Telemark Skier Magazine, but that he also was going to put together another film, this time under his own name. I looked at him as if he was crazy. It was MARCH!!! how was he going to get enough content to put together a film? But sure enough, in Josh Madsen style he made it happen. He contacted J.T. Robinson, one of the members of the Verticle Integration Project, got some footage from years previous, got some help from mother nature who delivered an abnormally long Utah winter season and… Vwolla! you have an incredible film that is a collage of the top telemark athletes spanning a few years and many locations. The music is great, the vibe is fun and it definitely paints a picture of what the life of a freeheel athlete looks like.

Telemark Skier Magazine has decided to team up with Josh and they are hitting the road on a 50 city tour so he is sure to be in your area go to Freeheellife.com to see when he is coming to your town!
